The Laguna provincial government has doubled down on its efforts to strengthen information dissemination among public officials from the city to the barangay level.
In line with this initiative, the Laguna Information Officers’ Network (LION) was re-launched on Aug. 7 during the organization’s general assembly through the Laguna public information officers.
“One of our programs is (for information) to reach down to the barangay level… that’s our target, so that information network becomes more efficient right at the grassroots level,” Danilo Lucas, the head of the Laguna Public information Office, said in the assembly at the Governor’s Office Conference Room in Santa Cruz.
Lucas also encouraged the use of its Barangay Information Officers Network (BION), adding the need for information to reach barangays and communities especially during times of catastrophe.
LION was first established in February 2005, with the goal of improving grassroots communication throughout the province.
Laguna Governor Sol Aragones is onboard with this initiative to improve the dissemination of information down to the province’s constituents.
“Information is vital, and it is important that the information we give to people is accurate. For journalists like us, it’s crucial that we think carefully about the words we use,” said Aragones, who is a former journalist.
“Ultimately, we were taught that when we create a news story or report, it should be clear and understandable to everyone, from a garbage collector to a company executive.”
Both comprised of Laguna-based public information officers and agency-based communication practitioners, the LION and the BION ensure that there is a clearer and stronger utilization and reliability of grassroots-level information.
The LION and BION are guided by the Philippine Information Agency (PIA), playing an advisory role to the network.
