Heritage, Reimagined is this year’s production to be presented by the Cultural Center of the Philippines and Bayanihan Folk Arts Foundation, Inc. at The Metropolitan Theater, Manila.
The production will feature the Bayanihan Philippine National Folk Dance Company which for 69 years has done more than just perform—it has been a powerful storyteller, transforming the soul of the Filipino people into a vibrant spectacle of dance. More than a cultural showcase, Bayanihan is a living testament to the Filipinos’ resilience, taking ancient traditions and breathing new, dynamic life into them. While its repertoire is a rich tapestry of cultures from across the archipelago, the company truly shines when it stages new works that speak about pride and empowerment.
This year’s production continues Bayanihan’s mission to showcase the indomitable Filipino spirit through dances.
Bayanihan Folk Arts Foundation Inc. Foundation Executive Director Marielle Benitez Javellana, a former national athlete and performing artist, said “I’ve always believed that the grit of sports and the grace of dance are two sides of the same coin. Both demand discipline, both express emotion, and both reveal the sheer poetry of the human body in motion.”
She added: “In last year’s season production, Unbound Folklore, we introduced two stunning new pieces: Sticks of Fury and Eskrimadoras. These dances weren’t just a spectacle; they were a conversation. They quickly became audience favorites, weaving the intricate, disciplined movements of Kali or Arnis -the Filipino martial art- into a captivating narrative. Sticks of Fury celebrated the strength of men, while Eskrimadoras was a fierce, graceful portrayal of female empowerment. We proved that the raw physicality of martial arts could be transformed into the elegance of dance, resonating powerfully with our modern audience.”
“We are honored to once again demonstrate how the movements of Filipino Martial Arts can be transformed into a powerful expression of our national identity. In tandem with these new works, we will present the classic dances that have been cherished by generations, celebrating the very roots of our culture. We are also proud to highlight the vibrant traditions of the Bicol Region, proving that Bayanihan’s journey is not just about looking forward, but also about rediscovering the beauty of our rich and diverse heritage.”
Heritage, Reimagined will be staged on August 29, 2025 at 8 pm and on August 30, 2025 at 3 pm and 8 pm.
