A Filipino sarsuela in “Panunuluyan: A Musical Journey of Faith and Giving”

Taguig City, Philippines — Panunuluyan: A Musical Journey of Faith and Giving brings to life a cherished Filipino Christmas tradition that retells the journey of Joseph and Mary in search of shelter on the night of Christ’s birth. Presented as a Filipino sarsuela, the production blends music, movement, and storytelling to celebrate faith, hospitality, and hope. These are values deeply rooted in Filipino culture.

This landmark production is the first musical theater work produced by the Board of Trustees of the Veterans of World War II, in partnership with Takipsilim Community Theater. More than a theatrical presentation, Panunuluyan bridges history and heritage by using the arts to preserve Filipino culture as a living legacy, thus, making history relevant, meaningful, and accessible to younger generations.

Written and directed by Meldrig “Direk” Costuna, Artistic Director of Takipsilim Community Theater and a nominee for Best Director for a Musical at the 38th Aliw Awards, the production is musically led by Eugene Belbis, an award-winning composer and music director recognized for Best Musical Direction for a Musical and Best Composer for Original Music for Theater, and once again a nominee at the upcoming 38th Aliw Awards.

The musical stars Carlo Fabillar as Joseph and Stacy Maxilom as Mary, supported by a dynamic cast of young, emerging actors, singers, and dancers. The production places the future at the heart of its mission, with performers largely drawn from the youth. Among them is a nine-year-old cast member who is the granddaughter of one of the nation’s oldest living World War II veterans, now 104 years old. This is a powerful symbol of generations united, honoring the past while shaping their own creative voice.
