AUSTRIAN SILENT FILM AT THE INTERNATIONAL SILENT FILM FESTIVAL MANILA

Austria is proud to present The Life of Beethoven (Das Leben des Beethoven), a 1927 Austrian silent drama film directed by Hans Otto Löwenstein, starring Fritz Kortner, that traces the life of Ludwig van Beethoven–one of the most influential composers in history. Set in Vienna, the cultural capital of Europe where Beethoven lived and composed, the film captures both his artistic genius and the emotional solitude he endured, most notably his journey through hearing loss.

This rare cinematic gem, accompanied by live music, revives not only the composer’s inner world but also the atmosphere of 19th-century Vienna, the city that shaped his legacy. Vienna’s cultural soul lives in Beethoven’s compositions, and through this screening, we are honored to share that heritage with Filipino audiences.

This special screening is made possible through the support of HearLife Verein, the nonprofit arm of MED-EL, a global leader in hearing implant solutions based in Austria. HearLife Verein promotes awareness around hearing loss, hearing health, and the right of every person to access the world of sound through technology, education, and the arts.

We are especially honored to feature a performance by HearLife Verein’s talented partner artists, whose artistry reflects the organization’s mission to empower voices from the hearing loss community and to celebrate the many ways in which music and creativity can be expressed.

Let’s travel back to Beethoven’s Vienna and experience the magic of silent cinema together!
