Nickel Asia Aligns Supply Chain Network with Sustainability Goals

Bonifacio Global City, Taguig – Listed natural resource development company Nickel Asia Corp. (NAC) convened its suppliers and business partners last week as it aims to align its supply chain network with the company’s sustainability goals and commitments.

This is part of the Company’s initiatives to account for its Scope 3 emissions and accelerates the Company’s drive to realize its ESG goals by establishing a resilient and sustainable supply chain.

Scope 3 emissions are those that an organization doesn’t directly own or control, and include emissions from activities in the value chain such as supply chain and disposal.

In 2023, NAC initiated the Scope 3 Emissions Inventory in alignment with its 2025 target of 100-percent completion of GHG accounting. For the quantification of all Scope 3 emissions, it was essential to involve and get the support of the members of the Group’s supply chain. Through the cooperation of the management and all Business Units, the survey garnered a 100-percent response rate.

Apart from mitigating environmental impact, the Company also aims to align the policies of its supply chain partners through the cascade of its policies on Occupational Safety and Health, Human Rights, Anti-Bribery, and Supplier Code of Conduct.

NAC Chief Sustainability Officer Jose Bayani Baylon discussing the importance of establishing a sustainable supply chain

“It is incumbent upon every corporate citizen to digest the fragility of the current world situation, what with climate change and its nuances. So it has to be ‘all hands-on-deck’ with data-driven and science-based strategies, supported by a committed, resilient, supply chain to achieve a responsible and stable sourcing ecosystem pivotal to winning our sustainability dreams,” said Jose Bayani Baylon, NAC Senior Vice President for Sustainability, Risk Management, Corporate Affairs, and Communications. Baylon is also the Company’s chief sustainability officer.

Since NAC formalized the integration of ESG into the fabric of its businesses, it has made significant milestones in embedding ESG improvements in its operations. Last year, NAC declared its goal to achieve Net Zero carbon by 2050. It also submitted its commitment to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), a global organization that sets emissions reduction standards based on climate science.

NAC  is the first company with mining assets in the Philippines to declare that it has completed a comprehensive inventory of its carbon emission from land use change and the first to fully transition to technological-driven processes in data-gathering.

Moving forward, NAC aims to integrate sustainability requirements in accreditation, contractual obligations, and renewal of contracts with suppliers.
