FFW Welcomes House Passage of ₱200 Wage Hike: ‘That was a Dunk Shot on 3rd Reading’

The Federation of Free Workers (FFW) has welcomed the passage of the ₱200 nationwide minimum wage hike bill on third and final reading in the House of Representatives.

“The House did not fail us. It may have lost the first quarter, but it came from behind, did a fastbreak and made the winning dunk on 3rd reading,” declared Atty. Sonny Matula, President of the FFW.

“We thank Speaker Martin Romualdez, Labor Committee Chair Fidel Nograles, TUCP Partylist Raymond Mendoza who chaired the proceedings, Akbayan Rep Perci Cerdeña, Makabayan bloc legislators, and all other Representatives who helped pave the way for this last crucial shot for workers,” Matula added.

For decades, Filipino workers have powered the country’s economic growth—yet millions remain trapped in poverty wages. The ₱200 across-the-board wage hike is a long-overdue corrective step toward giving workers a just share of that growth.

The FFW also stressed that raising wages will stimulate local economies:
“Money in workers’ hands stays in the Philippines—spent on food, transport, school needs, and daily essentials. This wage hike will fuel demand and benefit small businesses, farmers, and local producers,” Matula said.

“This is a lifeline, not just for unionized workers but especially for the millions without collective bargaining agreements,” he emphasized.

The Bicameral Conference Committee composed of both Houses will follow. Hopefully, it will act promptly before the end of the 19th Congress.
