Ang lumbay ng Mayo ni Louie Jon A. Sánchez

In Memoriam, Cirilo F. Bautista (1914-2018)

May lumbay ang Mayo na ito—

Naglilimas, unti-unti, ng búhay

Upang igiit yata ang likás

Na panglaw ng mabuhay.

Ano pa ba’ng dapat pang

Matututuhan bukod dito?

Sa malayò, ang tila pagsinghap-

Singhap pa ng mahal na Lola,

Habang hinihintay na tuluyang

Malagot ang hininga—parang di

Mapatid-patid, sa pakikinig

Ko sa telepono, kahit wala nang

Dapat hintayin pa, halimbawa,

Ang pagbabalik ng supling

Na malaong nagpaka-alibugha.

Sa malápit, dito, ang pagtaas-

Pagbabâ ng dibdib ng mahal na guro,

Marubdob, walang pagsuko,

Habol-habol ang hininga, waring

Tinig sa kaniyang mga epikong

Umawit, nag salaysay hinggil

Sa bigat ng búhay sa kapuluang ito

Na hindi na yata makababangon,

Tulad niyang piit ngayon ng sala-

Salabid na mga kable’t tubo.

May mga paglisang sumasagitsit

At inuulila ka ng gitla’t

Tinutugis ng pananangis.

May mga walang pagmamadali,

Wari’y ibig kang paupuin,

Patahanin sandali, sa isang sulok,

Upang, tulad ng mga mongheng

Hanap ay kaliwanagan, matamang

Pagbulayin itong bangkay

Ng paglayô ng palad na tunguhan.

Walang kaloob na kapalagayan

Ang pagninilay kundi sukdol-sindak

Sa alam na hindi talaga alam.

Mabuti’t mapang-alo ang banayad

Na pagtangan sa aking kamay—

Pasasalamat sa pagdamay

Sa pagtatanod niya sa ospital—

Ng masiyahing maybahay ng guro,

Handa nang maglambong ng luksa.

“Malungkot talaga ang búhay, ano?,”

Mahinahong tanong niya—wari’y

Sandaling pagsasatinig

Ng pagkamapagbiro ng guro

Na nagturo ng parikala’ttalinghaga.

May ningning sa kaniyang mga mata.

THE MAYOR MARVEY MARIÑO EFFECT: How Batangas City’s chief executive is reshaping public service

There is a certain rhythm to Batangas City—one that reveals itself in the steady movement of people, services, and systems that increasingly seem to work in sync. From its role as a key industrial and port hub in Southern Luzon, the city has long been defined by commerce and connectivity. But beneath that economic identity, a quieter transformation appears to be taking shape—one focused on expansion and organization. Processes are being tightened. Services are being streamlined. And governance, often perceived as reactive, is beginning to feel better structured.

With YAKAP now in place, Dr. Mercado says his hope for the years ahead is not simply better coverage figures, but a deeper sense of peace of mind among Filipino families.
