Barter Lover

Before the second episode of the Philippines Graphic Literary Workshop (PGLW) concluded on March 21, we knew that we had one more thing that we can offer our bright young fellows: a starting platform for their creative endeavors. Here, we present one of their final outputs from the workshop. We also asked them to provide an artwork that they think best represents their stories. Read on.

Newton failed to mention that
“to accept another's keys of their home is a form of loving.”

Your favorite fruit
with a matcha drink
red as your hair
and the sun dress
that spikes the oximeter
from my pocket which
I stole from my mother’s office.

Oh Barter Lover,
the kitchen mess I made
your instinct to clean
with your sparkling clean plate
whenever I cook a meal for you

from my temples
you wipe the rain
that sounds like vows
under the wind chimes
of your front door
because my wallet was empty
as the midnight streets of Manila
I walked from my kitchen to yours.

Keeping the keys to the home we made,
I'll feed you warmth
while you fill me with peace.

I accept this cycle of trade.
