White Afternoon

Before the second episode of the Philippines Graphic Literary Workshop (PGLW) concluded on March 21, we knew that we had one more thing that we can offer our bright young fellows: a starting platform for their creative endeavors. Here, we present one of their final outputs from the workshop. We also asked them to provide an artwork that they think best represents their stories. Read on.

I am looking for the warmth of her presence amidst
the sea of sophisticated corsets & suits like ashtray
with a zing of tangerine mist on the rocks because the lipstick
stains from my lover’s kiss upon my honey skin are getting
fainter by the hour and this party is being a damning waste.
It’s easy to pay no mind to their fig-stained chins and winces
from the dirty tannins of the wine because I can only really
think about losing myself in those gasoline-lit eyes, superseding
perfection when caressed by the darling glint of her smile. I will look
beyond the arched windows and see the ripples of the ocean
scattering our bare bodies underneath the glimmering sun for the
gulls to feast on. The rest of the world will have no choice but
to witness us drenched in salinity and grace. I will have to make a
cathedral out of her. Don’t blow out the candle flame yet. I am
her patron saint and people will utter her divinity when they think of me.
Think of me. Think of me. Don’t pull me out of this white afternoon.
