Lope K. Santos

Lope K. Santos (1879 – May 1, 1963) was a poet, scholar, and legislator. He was a labor leader during the early years of the Philippine labor movement and was also a leading figure in the development of the Philippine national language. He is the author of the novel Banaag at Sikat, the epic poem Ang Panggingera, and Ang Apat na Himagsik ni Francisco Balagtas at Ibá pang Sanaysay. He was given the Rizal Pro Patria Award in 1961 by President Carlos P. Garcia. A new translation by Danton Remoto of Banaag at Sikat was published by Penguin Books in 2021.
