Biñan City deftly combines history, tradition, and tourism promotion
For almost 10 years now, the Biñan City government has employed a clever development formula that ties culture and history into the city’s tourism programs.
“Our city’s rich cultural heritage and historical significance are integral to our identity and have always been a source of pride for our community. By promoting and preserving our cultural assets, we not only honor our past but also create a unique and authentic experience for visitors that sets Biñan apart from other destinations,” beamed Biñan City Vice Mayor Angelo “Gel” Alonte.
The city’s commitment to preserving its rich cultural heritage has over the years expanded to successful heritage tours, eco-tourism initiatives, and the ongoing construction of the City of Biñan’s Performing Arts Theater, a bona fide cultural and creative hub—not only for the city, but for the entire Southern Tagalog region.
“The City of Biñan’s Performing Arts Theater will be a space where local artists can collaborate, showcase their work, and engage the community in cultural activities. It is a significant step forward in enhancing our cultural offerings,” Gel said.
He added that once completed, the Theater’s “multi-platform capability to foster local talent and to function as a ready venue for cultural expression would contribute greatly to an enriched community life and a more vibrant and resilient City of Biñan.”
It is estimated that some 10,000 residents and cultural workers are expected to actively promote and participate in the Theater’s various events annually.
NEW PROGRAMS
Building on this foundation, the Vice Mayor said the city government is now conceptualizing several new tourism programs that will further enhance the city’s appeal.
“One key initiative is the further expansion of heritage tours to include not just our historic sites but also immersive experiences in traditional crafts, local cuisine, and festivals. This will give tourists a deeper understanding of Biñan’s cultural roots while supporting local artisans and businesses” he mentioned.
The City of Biñan is also exploring the development of eco-tourism programs that highlight Biñan’s natural beauty and promote environmental sustainability.
“These include creating green spaces, nature trails, and river tours that showcase our commitment to preserving the environment while providing recreational opportunities for both residents and visitors,” Gel bared.
Toward this end, the local government has invested in cleaning and greening the city.
Gel stressed that in all these efforts, “the goal is to ensure that Biñan’s tourism development is inclusive, sustainable, and deeply connected to our cultural and historical heritage. In doing so, we aim to attract more visitors, boost the local economy, and foster a greater sense of pride among our constituents.”
UNIQUE VALUE
The Vice Mayor said he intended to oversee the full integration of Biñan City’s developed cultural heritage and strategic location with the city’s economic development plans and programs.
“By harmonizing tourism, local history, and the arts with business opportunities, we create a unique value proposition for companies looking to be part of a vibrant, forward-looking community,” Gel concluded.
