Tariman’s second  book sums up 48 years in the Arts

Arts journalist Pablo A. Tariman will sum up his coverage of the performing arts for 48 years in his second book, Encounters in the Arts.

In the music chapter of the book are Cecile Licad,  Grzegorz Nowak,  Luciano Pavarotti, Vladimir Spivakov, Otoniel Gonzaga, Arthur Espiritu, Evelyn Mandac, Nena del Rosario Villanueva, and Luis Valencia, among others.

Lead stories in the dance section are Maya Plisetskaya, Natalia Makarova, Yoko Morishita, Maniya Barredo, Nicolas Pacana,  Patrick Bissell, Alice Reyes, Agnes Locsin, Lisa Macuja Elizalde, and Shirley Halili-Cruz.

Cinema section of the book has articles on Lino Brocka, Ishmael Bernal, Joel Lamangan, John Lloyd Cruz,  John Arcilla, and Paul Cedrick Juan, among others.

Distinguished conductors in the book are represented  by Kurt Masur, Tarmo Peltokoski, and Helen Quach. 

The new generation of artists is represented by classical guitarists Aaron Aguila and Adrik Cristobal, clarinetist Andrew Constantino and Jason Marquez and violinist Jeanne Marquez. 

Tariman  had a cultural column in the Manila Chronicle called “Culture Beat” and “View From The Wing” in the Sunday Times Magazine.  He has covered the performing arts earlier in Expressweek, Manila Bulletin, Times Journal, Celebrity Magazine and the Philippines Free Press and later in the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Philippine Star, Vera FilesCoverStory.ph, The Diarist.ph, Philippines Graphic, and the BusinessMirror

He is author of a first book of poetry, Love, Life and Loss—Poems During the Pandemic. He was one of 160 Asian poets in the Singapore-published anthology, The Best Asian Poetry 2021-22 edited by Sudeep Sen. He is one of the poets given the Graphic Salute Award during the 2023 Nick Joaquin Literary Awards (NJLA) given by Philippines Graphic.  

He received the Aliw Awards for Media Advocacy in the Arts in 2018 and the Philippine Leaf Awards in 2020. He was declared Outstanding Citizen in the Arts by the City of Manila, Pasig, Legazpi City, Catanduanes, and by a private foundation in Cebu City, which cited his consistent reporting in the arts for many years.

For organizing acclaimed concerts in Iloilo City with world class artists for five years, he was named honorary citizen Iloilo City by Mayor Jerry Trenas in October 2022.

Born in Baras, Catanduanes, he took up journalism at the Manuel L. Quezon University before joining Graphic Magazine in 1971. He has three daughters and six grandchildren.
