First barangay health service unit in Cebu City renovated by SM Foundation

In pursuit of its commitment to provide quality and excellent health services to the community it serves, the SM Foundation undertook the renovation of the Lahug Health Center to better address the health concerns of the residents of Brgy. Lahug.

The newly refurbished center houses an activity center for children, a lounge for the elderly, dental clinic, doctor’s consultation rooms, labor and recovery rooms, a pharmacy )medicine storage area), nurses and midwives’ station, reception and waiting area, TB DOTS Center and Birthing Center to conform with Philhealth’s requirements for accreditation.

This is the 1st barangay health service unit established among the 80 barangays of the city of Cebu. It caters to 39,573 families in 48 sitios, the biggest barangay in the city. Its renovation and improvement showcased a strong and cordial public-private partnership in the pursuit of a healthy community.

The Lahug Health Center was upgraded into a main health center and is now considered a one-stop shop to house the 1st ever established Barangay Behavioral Health Unit (BBHU) pursuant to an ordinance sponsored by Delos Santos. The Barangay Behavioral Health Unit will address the behavioral related causes of problems in drugs, suicides, depression, domestic violence, and family conflicts, among others.

The Center, which is the 132nd Wellness Center so far of the SM Foundation is also the 36th improved community center nationwide.

The inauguration and formal turnover of the improved two-storey center gathered representatives from the local government unit led by City Councilor Margot Osmena & wife of Mayor Tommy Osmena, Hon. Mary Ann Delos Santos, Deputy Mayor for Health of Cebu City, Hazel Ann Muana Empleo, Brgy. Councilor for Health & Alice Marie Aycardo, Asst. Health Office & OIC of the Lahug Health Center. Marissa Fernan, Vice President of SM Prime Holdings, Renato Leduna& Mesdames Kristine Sena & Teresa Mempin represented SM City, Cebu & SM Supermalls while SM Foundation trustee & Head of Communications Affairs, Ramon “Chito” Macapagal, Trustee of SM Foundation and Head of Corporate Affairs of SMIC & Connie Angeles, Senior Vice President & Executive Director for Health and Medical Programs came in behalf of the Foundation.
