To Them who Mean the Most

Love Introduced

The sun is caught

Somewhere between your teeth

It must be

When you smile

Cherry blossoms bloom

And rose petals sprout

If not on the ground,

Then at the very least in my stomach

When your eyes crinkle towards me,

The world is still and the sky is gentle

And the lone sound is your soft breathing

You break down the ancient walls in my chest

You make me believe

That someone can be worth

Every teardrop of a million

You remind me that love

Was meant to bring two people together

And keep them

For once in my life, I know

Looking into the coffee swirls of your eyes

And tracing the lines of your palms

Like an endless railroad I could go circles in

That this is how I want to wake up

My entire life

Your arm flung lazily around me,

Your breath lightly caressing my ear

Let’s spend our years, each and every single one of them,

Answering the questions written in the scars from our past,

Swimming hand-in-hand through the uncertainties of tomorrow

You are a choice all too easy to make,

And one I will always be thankful I’ve made

The sun is caught

Somewhere between your teeth

It must be

Because when you smile

So do I

Apolinaria

Woman,

You walk through flames

And make them look like roses

Does your name stand for strength

Or is it beauty

I should assume both

I walk strong only because

I follow in your tracks

I smile bright only because

Your light reaches me

From across the city

You were never a single mother

Just a mom and dad

Rolled in one.

A Long and Short Wait

Seeping through the curtains

Rays of light crawl past the cloth

Little-by-little the darkness shies away

From the corners of my room

There I am

Witness to the guard change

Between the moon and the sun

There are no shifts for the restless

My eyes continue their romance with the ceiling

But my mind has long departed from here

It has spent the night searching the great unknown

In hopes of finding wherever it is

My heart ran off to

Somewhere that I know most

There you are

The hands of time point to you

You, bathing in the river

Where love fought for and love lived for

Flow into

There you are, in the middle of the streams

Drenched in the memories

Our scars were born to create

There you are

Years of smiles and plastered onto your skin

Years of sleepless nights written on your eyelids

There you are

Bruised and puffy-eyed

Still determined

Somewhere that I know least

There is you

These fingertips have long forgotten

The rosy petals of poetry

Until they met the lines resting on your palm

Every word you speak

Speaks into existence

Cadence somewhere between my ribs

Echoing a rhythm long forgotten

Yet entirely new and

inviting

Time asks me

if I am losing my mind

Reason tells me to turn back

Logic whispers quick in my ear

But the wind howls loudly into my ear

Towards the edge of the rye

There you are

Beyond the perceivable present

Past the familiar green

There you are

Standing in the abyss

of things I’ve never known

There you are

Doe eyed

Sun-kissed

Easy to love

The sun now blazes through my curtains

Light shoos away the dark

And it has retreated

Into my mind

Forcing my eyes to embrace darkness

Even in the light of day

I find my last thought to be

That my heart has not come home

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Miguel Agcaoili
Miguel Agcaoili
Miguel Agcaoili, known by his friends and family as Migs, grew up in a family of writers, actors, and directors. From an early age, he was interested in exactly those things that surrounded him growing up. Much of his life has been spent in writing, acting in theater, and occasionally in TV specials as a kid, as well as directing in small-scale productions. His heart, however, has always been in writing. After all, he believes that there is no movie, song, production or play that can truly stand on its own without a bit of good writing. These days, he’s spent the past few years writing for TV specials and major live events while finishing his studies as a Creative Writing major at the Ateneo de Manila University.
