SM Foundation: A Place for Faith, Youth, and Community

via GRAPHIC PLUS — In the heart of bustling Binondo, the Felicidad T. Sy Foundation, Inc. has unveiled the Felicidad T. Sy Pastoral and Youth Center—more than a building, it stands as a sanctuary for faith, community, and the youth navigating the pressures of urban life.

The Foundation continues to create purposeful spaces that nurture both spiritual growth and human connection, which is rooted in its mission to uplift lives through faith, service, and community development.

Replacing a decades-old, cramped facility, the new Felicidad T. Sy Pastoral and Youth Center was designed to better serve a growing community. During the blessing, Manila Archbishop Jose F. Cardinal Advincula described it as a “sacred space”—a home “where fraternity heals, where prayer renews, and where charity overflows into mission.”

What once stood has now been transformed into a more welcoming space.

Visitors and staff interact in the center’s newly designed, air-conditioned reception area, which Parish Secretary Christina notes is far more accommodating and comfortable for everyone.

Parish secretary Christina, who has served since 2016, witnessed the transformation firsthand.
“It’s not just better for us—it’s better for everyone who comes,” she shared.

For many—especially altar servers, choir members, catechists, and student groups—the parish has long been a place of refuge. The center deepens its role as a space where young people and communities can come together.

Located on the third floor, the Rectory living room of the Felicidad T. Sy Pastoral and Youth Center offers a comfortable and dignified space for rest, reflection, and fraternity among the clergy.

“It will hopefully encourage more groups, especially young people, to use the space,” said Msgr. Esteban Lo. “Mas matiwasay, there is peace now, both in rest and in service.”

The center also reflects a deeper story of giving rooted in faith. For the Sy family, the project was inspired by their mother, Felicidad “Nanang” Sy, whose quiet generosity shaped their values.

“Through her actions, we learned what it means to have faith, to serve others, and to give without expecting anything in return,” shared SM Prime Holdings, Inc. (SMPH) Chairman of the Executive Committee Hans Sy. “May we all be inspired to give, to serve, and to live faith every day.”

Teresita Sy-Coson, Vice Chairperson of SM Investments (SMIC), said the goal was simple yet profound: to strengthen the Church’s role as a community anchor.

“We hope this will lead to more interaction with the community,” she said. “A place where people don’t just come and go, but truly gather.”

The Felicidad T. Sy Pastoral and Youth Center reminds us that even in the busiest corners of the city, what people often seek is not more noise, but a place of peace.

And sometimes, all it takes is a space to bring a community—and its faith—back to life.
