JC Santos (The Foxtrot, Constellations, Lam-ang) and Bart Guingona (The Crucible, Julius Caesar, Ang Kuripot) last shared the stage in the critically acclaimed, sold-out 2023 production of ‘Red’ directed by Guingona. This time it is Santos in the director’s chair, taking on the dual role as he portrays Bernard 1, Bernard 2, and Michael Black, opposite Guingona’s Salter.
Written in 2002 by British playwright Caryl Churchill, at the height of public debate over cloning, “A Number” follows a father who has secretly cloned his son and as the play unravels, is confronted by the unforeseen consequences of his hubris.
More than two decades later, the play finds new resonance in a cultural moment shaped by artificial intelligence, when identity is no longer simply replicated, but generated, predicted, and controlled.
WHYNoT brings together theater, with the visual and media arts in an exciting collaboration with Ateneo Art Awards – Fernando Zobel Prize for Visual Art shortlisted artist Miguel Uy and sound artist Frankie Lalunio.
Miguel’s work explores the role and paradoxes of technology, media, and globalization within the struggles of individuality, identity, and independence, while Frankie’s practice examines listening cultures, epistemologies, and natural-machinic friction through noise, feedbacking, and DIY electronics.
