But for many Filipino students, learning is still shaped by circumstances beyond their control — overcrowded classrooms, aging facilities, and spaces that make it difficult to concentrate before lessons even begin. These are among the realities that SM Foundation has witnessed in communities over the years, inspiring its continued efforts to support schools and help improve learning environments in the country.
While conversations about education often focus on curriculum or performance, SM Foundation recognizes that a classroom can influence more than attendance or participation. A safe, well-ventilated, and conducive learning space can help students feel more confident, more engaged, and more willing to imagine futures larger than the limitations around them. For teachers, improved facilities can create conditions that allow stronger connections, focus, and care inside the classroom.
It is this belief that continues to guide SM Foundation’s School Building Program, a long-term initiative rooted in the vision of its founder, Henry Sy Sr., who believed education is one of the strongest pathways toward opportunity and social mobility.
Since 2002, SM Foundation has constructed 116 school buildings and nearly 400 classrooms nationwide, benefiting close to 20,000 students attending single-shift classes. The Foundation has also supported the repair of school facilities and the installation of PWD-friendly ramps and handwashing stations, recognizing that accessibility, safety, and sanitation are equally important parts of a quality learning environment.
These initiatives have helped reduce overcrowding, allowing students to participate more actively while enabling teachers to manage classes more effectively and meaningfully.
Over the years, SM school buildings have stood as spaces of hope, offering more than concrete and steel as they provide learning environments where futures begin to take shape.
That hope continues to grow through new school building projects across the country this year.
Within these classrooms, confidence builds, aspirations start to feel within reach, and the possibility of a better future becomes easier to imagine. By creating brighter, more conducive learning spaces, SM Foundation aims to give students not only a place to learn but also the support and encouragement to pursue dreams that once felt beyond reach.
