The Commission on Human Rights of the Philippines stood out as a primary recipient of the 2026 Freedom Flame Awards at the Decagon Events Place in Pasig City.
Hosted by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom Philippines during its 40th anniversary celebration, the ceremony centered on the theme “Kalayaan Noon, Ngayon at Bukas – 40 Years of Freedom in Action.” The event gathered advocates, policymakers, youth leaders, and artists to honor exceptional contributions toward expanding democratic spaces.
The CHR was presented with the prestigious award in recognition of its steadfast defense of human rights, its enforcement of the rule of law, and its dedicated effort to protect the dignity and freedoms of every Filipino citizen.
Representing CHR, Chief of Project Management Division Princess Molleno accepted the award, which was presented by Atty. Karry Sison, Managing Trustee of the Center for Liberalism and Democracy.
In its citation, FNF lauded the agency as a “steadfast guardian of justice, accountability, and democratic values,” emphasizing that CHR serves as a vital reminder that freedom is preserved through courage, integrity, and public service.
The evening’s keynote speaker, human rights advocate and former Rep. Lorenzo “Erin” Tañada III, highlighted the shared nature of civic responsibility. Reminding the audience that freedom requires active tending, Tañada noted that passing the torch to others expands its light rather than diminishing it.
While CHR’s recognition served as a highlight of the gathering, FNF also honored several other organizations and key institutions for their efforts in advancing democratic ideals.
Angat Pinas, Inc., commonly known as Angat Buhay, was recognized for turning compassion into organized civic action through its Angat Bayanihan Volunteer Network, with Executive Director Raffy Magno accepting the award on behalf of its volunteers.
Meanwhile, the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats was acknowledged for strengthening regional partnerships and defending liberal democracy across Asia, accepted by CALD Chair and former Secretary Butch Abad.
The Local Government Unit of Del Carmen, Surigao del Norte, led by Mayor Alfredo “JR” Coro II, received honors for promoting inclusive local leadership and participatory governance.
In addition, Kaya Natin! Movement for Good Governance and Ethical Leadership was celebrated for cultivating values-driven young leaders. The award was accepted by Marian Pastor Roces and former Nagcarlan Vice Mayor Amie Hernandez.
FNF Philippines Project Manager Yanyan Araña received individual recognition for her dedication to the foundation’s mission.
In marking 15 years of the Freedom Flame program along with four decades of FNF’s work in the Philippines, the event reaffirmed that protecting constitutional rights and institutional integrity relies on constant engagement, active citizenship, and collaborative effort.

He served as Bacolod Film Festival director in 2024 and Technical Consultant for Academic Linkages of the Film Development Council of the Philippines from 2022 to 2025. He is a member of the Academic Film Society Advisory Committee of the FDCP, a representative of the Education Sector to the National Committee on Cinema Executive Council, and Secretary of the NCC.
