MGM 2026 roundup: NCCA highlights art, heritage, and cultural spaces across the country

October is a month full of celebrations, including one that honors the four-cornered spaces where our history, stories, and identities find its right place.

Observed every October under Presidential Proclamation No. 798, s. 1991, Museums and Galleries Month (MGM) recognizes the importance of museums and galleries in fostering awareness and appreciation of Philippine culture and heritage.

As the lead agency for the annual observance, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) once again led the celebration in 2026 under the theme “Bridging Divides: Preserving the Present for Tomorrow,” highlighting the role of these institutions in connecting communities and generations through shared histories and artistic expression.

NCCA opens Museums and Galleries Month 2026

The festivities began on October 6, 2026, with an opening program organized by the NCCA in collaboration with the House of Representatives’ Legislative Library, Archives and Museum at The House: The Legislative Museum of the House of Representatives in the Batasang Pambansa Complex, Quezon City.

This year’s theme reflects the role of museums and galleries in keeping cultural heritage relevant to present-day life. By preserving the objects, artworks, and accounts that tell our stories, these spaces allow people to encounter different experiences and perspectives while recognizing the histories and traditions they share.

In his message on behalf of the Commission, NCCA Deputy Executive Director for Operations Bernan Joseph Corpuz highlighted art as an intrinsic part of the human experience and a means of bringing people together across differences.

“With a month-long appreciation for the diversity of Indigenous culture and artistic creativity, we are reminded that the true essence of art is alive and living around us,” he added.

The opening program featured messages, musical performances, the opening of the MGM exhibit, and the presentation of Within the Walls. Artists, curators, cultural workers, museum and gallery enthusiasts, and other guests joined the ceremony to mark the beginning of a month dedicated to the country’s arts and cultural heritage.

Spaces being celebrated all over the country

Throughout October, museums, galleries, art spaces, and cultural institutions across the country held exhibitions, workshops, educational programs, and community activities for MGM 2026. Exhibitions were a prominent feature, giving audiences opportunities to encounter contemporary artworks, historical collections, and cultural objects that reflect the breadth of Philippine artistic expression and heritage.

Among the highlights were the 16th Tam-awan International Arts Festival in Baguio City, which celebrated Indigenous arts and creativity; ManilART ’26 at the SMX Convention Center in Taguig City, which brought together artists and galleries; and the Cavite Art Fair, which concluded alongside the MGM closing ceremony on October 22 at the New Provincial Government Center in Trece Martires City, Cavite.

Other activities encouraged the public to engage with heritage through learning and participation. These included museology training, interactive museum activities, lectures on Baybayin, traditional craft demonstrations, film screenings, artist talks, community art projects, and educational outreach. Together, these programs offered different ways for people to explore the histories, practices, and creative expressions that shape their communities.

The month-long celebration culminated on October 22 at the New Provincial Government Center in Trece Martires City, Cavite, through the NCCA’s partnership with the Provincial Government of Cavite, through the Provincial Tourism Office. The closing ceremony also marked the conclusion of the 2nd Cavite Art Fair 2026, bringing together artists, artisans, cultural workers, and cultural advocates to recognize the province’s arts and heritage community.

The program featured messages from representatives of the NCCA and the Provincial Government of Cavite. In her message, Ms. Renee Talavera, NCCA Program Management Division chief, reflected on how the impact of museums and exhibitions extends beyond their opening hours and run dates, as the stories they share remain with the people who encounter them. She also noted that the month’s activities and the NCCA’s cultural initiatives throughout the year demonstrate how museums and galleries can keep heritage connected to contemporary life.

A discussion by Atty. Kathleen Tuason on the business of fine art offered participants insights into the practical aspects of pursuing an art career, including the business and regulatory considerations involved in bringing artworks to the market. The program also consisted a cultural presentation by Banda Kawayan Pilipinas.

As Museums and Galleries Month comes to a close, the NCCA encourages the public to continue visiting and supporting museums and galleries throughout the year. Whether through a local history collection, an art exhibition, or a community museum, these spaces offer ways to understand the experiences that have shaped our lives and the traditions we continue to carry forward.
