The Medical City (“TMC”) announced on September 17 the appointment of Jose Xavier B. Gonzales as its Chairman and Dr Eugenio Jose F. Ramos as its CEO with immediate effect.
The appointments follow a Special Stockholder Meeting (“SSM”) held on 13 September in accordance with TMC’s bylaws, where 230 shareholders representing 74% of the shareholdings in TMC were present and a vote was held to elect a new Board of Directors and CEO for 2018-2019.
Six doctors are among the newly elected Board of Directors, including Dr Augusto Sarmiento (chairman of the previous board), Dr Eugenio Jose F. Ramos, Dr Ruben Kasala, Dr. Rafael Claudio, Dr Cenon Alfonso and Dr Daniel Alonzo. Major shareholders Clermont Group, Fountel, Lombard and the Religious of the Virgin Mary are also represented in the board. Dr Augusto P. Sarmiento, one of the 2 surviving founders of TMC, has been conferred Chairman Emeritus.

Gonzales, Incoming Chairman, is a seasoned corporate leader and business owner who has served as the Treasurer and a Director for TMC for 19 years. Prior to joining TMC, he held senior management positions in companies across a range of industries in the Philippines where he played a key role in transforming and growing the companies he has worked with and owned. He helped facilitate the generous donation by the Lopez Group of the land on which TMC and Ateneo School of Medicine & Public Health (ASMPH) stand.
TMC CEO, Dr Eugenio Jose F. Ramos, is an esteemed member of the Philippine medical community and had served as national president of the Philippine College of Physicians.. He has been a practicing internist-cardiologist in TMC since 1987. He received his MBA from the Ateneo Graduate School of Business in 2008. Prior to his appointment as CEO, he was the SVP of the Medical Services Group of TMC and has served as director of the various boards of the TMC enterprise. He has been the CEO of TMC Iloilo since 2013. He brings into his new position a strong understanding of the future of healthcare and the nature of patient-centered care.
