Resorts World Manila (RWM) Chief Operating Officer Stephen James Reilly was given an Outstanding Entrepreneur Award by Enterprise Asia during the recently held Asia-Pacific Entrepreneurship Awards (APEA) in recognition of his role in the creation of the country’s first integrated resort and in spearheading RWM’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs.

The Outstanding Entrepreneur Award is given to business leaders who have shown outstanding ingenuity, who played a role in building a company, or raising it to new heights.

Steve, as Reilly is better known, played a key role in the pioneering team that created RWM and essentially jumpstarted the integrated resort industry in the Philippines. Nearly 10 years since then, Steve still considers the day they first opened RWM to the public as a career highlight.

“Getting RWM up and running at a time when the concept of integrated resorts was almost unheard of in the Philippines will always be one of the high points of my career,” Steve says. “It was an entirely new business model here and the excitement was palpable.”

Enterprise Asia is the region’s foremost non-governmental organization for private business. It has held the APEA since 2007, recognizing outstanding entrepreneurship and leadership in various industries across Asia.

“I am very honored to receive this award from an organization as prestigious as Enterprise Asia,” Steve says. “Even though it’s an individual award, I really consider this as a validation of the great work done by everybody at RWM.”

In giving the award to Steve, Enterprise Asia noted not just the impact of RWM in the creation of the now-booming integrated resort industry in the country, but also his role in the development of a sustainable and holistic CSR program for the company.

Under his direction and guidance, RWM has developed a finely-tuned Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) vision with clearly defined commitments that both meet communities’ immediate needs and play on RWM’s core strengths, resulting in advocacies that lean towards promoting Philippine culture and tourism, creating job opportunities for less fortunate individuals through training and employment, nurturing the arts, and volunteerism.

“I am a firm believer in the principle that those have been given much, have the moral obligation to use their privilege to benefit those who have less,” Steve mused. “Large, successful corporations have so much opportunity to create a huge positive impact on so many lives. It’s just a matter of finding how your CSR programs can be done sustainably.”
