Following its triumphant run at the 2026 Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival, the award-winning political drama “2 Valid IDs,” directed by Ma-an Asuncion-Dagñalan and written by Abet Pagdagdagan Raz, is taking its deeply human message beyond local shores for its international premiere at the 46th Hawai’i International Film Festival.
Selected for the festival’s Panorama section and nominated for the NETPAC Award, “2 Valid IDs” brings the urgent realities of Filipino administrative inequality to a global audience.
“2 Valid IDs” centers on Sylvia, played by Marietta “Pokwang” Subong in a standout performance that earned her the Cinemalaya 2026 Best Actress award.

Sylvia is a poor Ilocana farmer whose world turns upside down when her husband, Ramon (Joey Marquez), is hospitalized with severe Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.
When a relative living overseas remits money to help transfer Ramon to a private facility, Sylvia faces an unexpected wall. The remittance center refuses to release the funds because she cannot present two valid IDs. Her only form of identification, a PhilHealth card, is not accepted.

Desperate to save her husband, Sylvia navigates endless queues, administrative errors like name mismatches and predatory fixers. As days pass, the family’s limited money drains into daily expenses while Ramon’s medical condition rapidly deteriorates.

Aside from Subong and Marquez, “2 Valid IDs” also features Meryll Soriano, Zaijian Jaranilla, Bombi Plata, Marife Necesito, Chase Salazar, Nour Hooshmand, Joem Bascon, Maey Bautista, DMs Boongaling, Yian Gabriel, Michael Angelo “Mike” Dagñalan, and Jun Sabayton. The film was also recognized at Cinemalaya with the Audience Choice Award and Special Jury Award.

The blockbuster hit made its nationwide theatrical release last October 14, following its August premiere at Cinemalaya. Its Hawaii festival run marks a significant milestone for the team, which is supported by the International Film Festival Assistance Program of the Film Development Council of the Philippines. The film will be shown at HIFF on October 24, 7:30 p.m., October 27, 5:15 p.m., and November 5, 8 p.m.

Asuncion-Dagñalan also collaborated with executive producers Geo Lomuntad, Claudia Diaz Cojuangco, Ben Tsai, HJ Li, Paolo Fernandez, Mitch Fernandez, Jim Baltazar, and Lydia Gapas, cinematographer Neil Daza, editor Vanessa Ubas- De Leon, production designer Mao Fadul, sound designer Jannina Mikaela Minglanilla, musical scorers Mikey Amistoso and Jazz Nicolas.
In her director’s statement, Asuncion-Dagñalan highlighted the story, which asks fundamental questions about dignity and access. “It’s only in the Philippines that we are asked to show two valid IDs to get another ID,” she noted. “What happens to those who don’t have any? What is the value of a human life in a broken system?”

Asuncion-Dagñalan is a filmmaker recognized for her debut feature “Blue Room,” which bagged Best Foreign Film at the 2023 LA Femme International Film Festival. She also won Best Director honors at the Cinemalaya Film Festival in 2022 and the FAMAS Awards in 2023. She is part of both the Directors Guild of the Philippines, Inc. and the Filipino Screenwriters Guild.

By placing a human face on systemic administrative hurdles, “2 Valid IDs” serves as both an eye-opening cinematic narrative and a call for institutional empathy and reform.
