Avel Bacudio brings Filipiñana elegance to a dream wedding in Paris

via GRAPHIC PLUS — Acclaimed fashion designer Avel Bacudio displayed his expertise for modern interpretations of Philippine textiles and craftsmanship through bespoke wedding attire in Paris.

The designer for the 2025 SEA Games Philippine delegation lent his talents to national representatives once again by designing the nuptial garments of two-time SEA Games gold medalist Nikko Huelgas and Vice Consul Jackielou Gan.

The couple wore their bespoke Avel Bacudio creations at their civil wedding at the Philippine Embassy in Paris, France. Huelgas donned a classic Filipino barong, while Gan opted for a non-traditional wine-red Filipiniana for their wedding ceremony.

The Filipiñana dress was made from handwoven fabric called Trambia (blanket), highlighting the beautiful craftsmanship of Filipino weavers. The barong, made from piña silk, was designed as a full calado, showcasing the intricate handwork and artistry of Filipino embroiderers.

“As an advocate of local craftsmanship and Filipino artistry, I wanted the wedding attire to proudly showcase the talent and creativity of Filipino artisans,” Bacudio explained. “For me, it was important that every detail reflected our culture, heritage, and pride while bringing a touch of the Philippines to Nikko and Jackielou’s wedding in Paris.”

As representatives of the Philippines in sports and diplomacy, respectively, it felt only fitting for the couple to celebrate their union in garments that honored their heritage. Known for blending traditional Filipino elements with contemporary silhouettes, Bacudio proved to be the ideal designer to bring their vision to life.

Huelgas and Gan became engaged in the City of Love in January 2026. Their paths first crossed while serving the country at the 2024 Paris Olympics—he as part of the Philippine Olympic Committee delegation and she as a diplomat under the Philippine embassy in Paris. In a fitting twist of fate, their shared commitment to the Philippines led them to each other in one of the world’s most romantic cities.
