Councilors slam Grab PH for Grab Bike’s illegal operation in Lipa City

Lipa City Councilors have slammed Grab Philippines for the illegal operation of its Grab Bike service in the city.

During its session on December 4, the Sangguniang Panglungsod tackled the ongoing illegal operation of Grab Bike in Lipa City.

It was discovered that Grab Bike has no permit to operate from the Lipa City Council, making its operation illegal or “colorum.”.

Grab must first obtain a permit from the Sangguniang Panglungsod before it can operate its services in a particular city.

“Kailan nagsimula ang operasyon ng Grab Bike at kung saan ang tanggapan nito sa lungsod. Mahalagang malaman ang mga detalyeng ito dahil nag-o-operate na sila sa ating lugar,” a Councilor asked.

If confirmed, the Lipa City Council may impose fines on Grab and potentially ban its operations in the city.

The Philippine Competition Commission has previously fined Grab multiple times for violating the terms of its merger with Uber in 2018.

Since 2018, Grab has been penalized a total of PHP 86.7 million, including a PHP 16.15 million fine for violations related to fare standards and driver cancellations.

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) recently disclosed that it is looking into Grab’s excessive surge pricing and booking cancellations, particularly during the holiday season.
