On August 6, 2026, at 5:00 p.m., Instituto Cervantes in Manila will hold the talk “¿Por qué pervive la Leyenda Negra? Tres mitos” (Why does the Black Legend still exist? Three myths), delivered in Spanish by anthropologist Fernando Zialcita.
The talk will be part of the lecture series “Charlas de la Academia”, presented by Academia Filipina de la Lengua Española, an institution founded in 1924, committed to promote the use of Spanish language in the Philippines. This series of lectures on the Spanish heritage in the Philippines is an example of the various initiatives realized by the Academia.
«¿Por qué pervive la Leyenda Negra? Tres mitos» will explore three myths about Spanish’s history in the Philippines, granting a new perspective on the misconceptions that still persist, according to Professor Zialcita.
Lecturer Fernando Zialcita is a member of the Academia Filipina de la Lengua Española. Anthropology professor emeritus at Ateneo de Manila University, he is a distinguished academic by his studies about Filipino identity, as well as his work on the conservation of Filipino architectonic and cultural heritage.
